It's a Purim Simchah B'Shabbat Service
Friday, March 21, 2008 at 8:00p.m. in Memorial Hall

This year, our March Simchah B’Shabbat All-Music service, March 21 at 8 p.m., coincides with Good Friday, so we’ll be holding services in Memorial Hall. Purim this year starts Thursday evening March 20, so we’re going to extend the celebration to Friday evening! Our always musical service, with our band and back-up singers, will be enhanced with some Purim fun and frivolity, and even a bit of reading from Megillat Esther. All are encouraged to come in costume! Be there or be square.

Religious School
Perfectly Pleasurable Purim Pandemonium Program

Saturday, March 15, 2008
starting at 9:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall

On Saturday, March 15, parents and students at all grade levels are invited to our Perfectly Pleasurable Purim Pandemonium Program, beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall. Be sure to wear a costume (adults and teens, too!) We’ll begin with some songs and stories. There will be a costume parade and costume prizes, some fun activities, and, of course, hamantaschen and snacks. We’ll end our day with a new and improved Purim Carnival, with games for children of all ages. This year, we’re adding some additional tzedakah components, so we can help those in need while having our fun. Students (and grown-ups) can play carnival games to win prizes, or they can play to have donations made to one of the charities we have chosen to support. Because of the earlier starting time, we expect there will be plenty of time for the carnival while still ending the day at the usual time of 12:15 p.m. There will be no regular classes that day, but faculty will be present to help. Who knows, you might even get a chance to throw a whipped-cream pie at some of your teachers, or even Mr. D! Mark your calendars now—you won’t want to miss this.

WASHINGTON-AREA CHOIRS TO CELEBRATE ISRAEL'S 60TH BIRTHDAY AT THE STRATHMORE MUSIC CENTER

More than two dozen Washington-area synagogue youth, teen and adult choirs will join together to present

Libi B'Mizrah - My Heart is in the East:
A Musical
Celebration of Israel's 60th Birthday at the 2,000-seat Strathmore Concert Hall in Bethesda, Maryland

on March 2, 2008.

Narrated by Martin Goldsmith, the former host of National Public Radio's Performance Today, some 400-plus volunteer choir members from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, along with their cantors/directors and soloists, will help bring the entire Washington-area Jewish community together in memory and song.

Musical selections include Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, Ki Va Moed and Chalutzim Medley, among others.  The concert will conclude with the audience joining in the singing of Hatikvah.

Because of the tremendous success of the Strathmore choral concert in 2005 which commemorated the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in the United States and required the addition of a second performance to accommodate audience demand, two Libi B'Mizrah concerts will be held on the same day at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward social service tzedakah (charity) projects in Israel.

Tickets on sale now and going fast. www.strathmore.org

Tickets are priced at $25 and $18 for adults and $9 for children and will be available through the Strathmore ticket office (phone 301-581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org).  As the 2005 concert sold out, it is advisable to reserve your seats early.

Not for Women Only: Knitting (crochet allowed)
Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 2:00-4:00pm

Interested in working on your knitting or crochet project while enjoying snacks and conversation? Want to learn how to knit? Join us on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2-4 p.m. at BJC. RSVP to admin@bethesdajewish.com  or call 301-469-8636. Leave name(s), e-mail and telephone numbers and if not an adult, age, and tell us if instruction will be needed. We will call those who need instruction, in advance, to determine materials and prep. Every one should bring a snack to share. Questions? Contact Gail Weiss or Dorothy Umans; they’re in your BJC directory..

Information for BJC Choir Members (and potential members) about the Israel@60/Judaism@6000 concert at Strathmore on March 2, 2008.

Friends:

As some of you may have already learned, we are having another combined Jewish community adult, teen, and youth choir extravaganza to be held at Strathmore on Sunday, March 2, 2008 with two performances - 3:30pm and 7:00pm. (Dinner will be provided between concerts.) Like the hugely successful "350 Years of Judaism in the America" event two years ago, we expect this one will also play to sold-out audiences, and involve almost 600-700 singers between the two events. (Adult choirs are performing at both concerts--we're diving the youth choirs between the two concerts.) This concert's theme is " Israel@60/Judaism@6,000.

On Wednesday, December 12, at 8:00pm in the choir room, we will have an "informational" rehearsal at which time we will be handing out music. (This time, we will also be able to email you PDFs of the music, as almost all the composers/arrangers have given us permission to do so, so if you can;t be there Dec. 12, don't panic.) One of the cantors is also working on audio files of the various parts which will be accessible on the web for download.

After Dec 12, we'll next rehearse on Weds January 2, 2008. This will allow you time to look over and work with the music during the winter break.

Rehearsals will continue regularly on Wednesdays at 8pm in the Choir Room from Jan 2 through Feb. 27, 2008. In addition to our own rehearsals, here is the schedule of official event rehearsals:

bulletThere is a MANDATORY FINAL MUSIC REHEARSAL** at Washington Hebrew Congregation on Sunday, February 24, 2008 from 2:00-5:00pm. (Chances are that all the kids will rehearse first, and then the combined choirs, and then just the adults.
bulletThere is a MANDATORY TECH REHEARSAL ** at Strathmore on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, tentatively scheduled to start at 7pm. At this rehearsal there won't be much singing-mostly beginnings and endings of songs, and practicing moving on and off stage, etc.
There are also voluntary, but highly recommended "regional" music rehearsals-you can attend any or all, an in MD or VA (and there may also be some DC rehearsals added.)

bulletIn Maryland: Times for all: 1:30-2:15 for kids, 2:30-3:00 kids with adults, 3:00-4:30, adults
bulletSunday, January 13 at B'nai Tzedek (Potomac)
bulletSunday, January 27 at Beth Ami (Rockville)
bulletSunday, February 10 at Temple Emanuel (Kensington)

bulletIn Virginia: Times for all: 2:00-2:45 for kids, 3:00-3:30 kids with adults, 3:30-5:00, adults
bulletSunday, January 13 at Rodef Shalom (Falls Church)
bulletSunday, January 27 at Northern VA Hebrew Congregation (Reston)
bulletSunday, February 10 at beth El Hebrew (Alexandria)

Information about tickets will be forthcoming. Tickets are going to go on sale in early January.

**Technically, the final Music and Tech rehearsals are mandatory for all who are performing, however, individual choir directors can use their discretion at making a few exceptions.)

Also note that we will work Purim Shpiel rehearsals around the choir rehearsal schedule to minimize conflicts.

Please let Mr. D. know if you are able and willing to participate.

BJC Presents:

Jewish View of the Afterlife
with Dr. Simcha Raphael. Ph.D
January, 23, 2008 7:00pm

(Snow date April 9, 2008)

Based on Simcha Raphael's  bestselling book of the same name, JEWISH VIEWS OF THE AFTERLIFE is a unique historical and philosophical study tracing the evolution of ideas about individual postmortem survival in Judaism. Surveying a far-ranging assortment of texts on life after death in Bible, Apocrypha, Rabbinic literature, medieval philosophy, medieval legendary Midrash, and the Jewish mystical traditions of Kabbalah and Hasidism, this presentation will highlight the ever-changing notions of life after death over a period of almost four millennia.

In addition, through a synthesis of Jewish sources with contemporary psychological thought, near-death experiences and consciousness research, Simcha Raphael will explore contemporary ways of understanding the afterlife journey of the soul from a spiritual point-of-view.

New All-Music Kabbalat Shabbat Service starts Fri. Dec. 7

Owing to the tremendous response to the a cappella Shabbat service led by Sam Glaser when he visited BJC in October, and to the prototype new all-music service this past summer, BJC is adding another all-music service to our monthly rotation. The service, starting on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 8:00 p.m., and continuing on the first Friday of each month, will be a traditional Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) with very limited instrumentation, but lots of congregational singing. The service is very similar to the one BJC members experienced in Israel this past summer. To make the service a success we need YOU!!! It only works with lots of voices and lots of ruakh (spirit). Let6's all turn out Dec. 7.

An Evening of Sacred Chant with Rabbi Shefa Gold
Tue. Nov. 6 at 7:00pm at the DCJCC

Rabbi Shefa Gold, who has inspired so many BJCC members during her previous visits returns to our area for an evening of new Torah teaching and chant. Chanting, the repetition of a sacred phrase, is an ecstatic form of meditation that can open the doors of the heart, clear the mind of clutter, focus and refine intentions, and connect us to each other. The chant can attune us to ever-deepening levels of meaning, unlock the treasures of the heart, and give us an opportunity to generously serve each other.

Selichot Service and a Movie
Saturday Sept. 8, 9 p.m.

Covenant Hall

Join us for Selichot Service and a Movie-

Film: Liberty Heights, written and directed by Barry Levinson. A touching and humorous story set in Baltimore in the mid 1950's.

Our Rabbis deemed the final hour of the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah as a time of special power. Around the world, Jews gather at midnight to begin the process of repentance with special prayers and songs. Join us and experience the “hush at midnight.”

HELP BUILD BJC’s SUKKAH

YOU—are what we need to build a sukkah! Join together to help us set up and decorate our beautiful “indoor Sukkah” on the bimah in Covenant Hall. It has become a new BJC tradition over the past few years. On Sunday, Sept. 23 from 2:00—5:00pm, we need volunteers to set up the structure, and hang the branches, fruits and vegetables that make the indoor sukkah such a joy to the eye and the soul. This is one of those projects suitable for all ages, and snacks will be provided. Please contact the BJC office to sign up to help by Sept. 12.

BUILDING YOUR OWN SUKKAH? CONSIDERING IT?

If you are planning to erect a sukkah at your house, and are willing to have some guests visit it during Sukkot, please let Mr. D or the BJC office know so we can share this information with those who might be interested. If you’re considering erecting your own sukkah this year (and you really ought to think about it) Mr. D. would be happy to assist you in obtaining plans, ready-made kits, and other resources.

AND DON’T FORGET THE LULAV AND ETROG:

Once again, BJC will be placing a bulk order from a supplier for etrogs and lulavim. If you’re interested in obtaining your own to use, information will be available from the RS Office, the BJC Office, or on the BJC Website. It’s best to place your order before Sept. 12 to insure timely delivery for Sukkot.

It's Choir Time Again and We Need You!

Did you enjoy the music at last year's High Holidays? Did you look up at the choir and think wistfully, "Gee, I'd like to do that?" Well now, you can! A vibrant and full sounding choir is a key part of creating for the congregation the spirit of the Days of Awe. It also can enrich the holiday experience of the singer as well. There is something deeply satisfying about leading worship through song. The BJC choir needs more voices. Rehearsals begin on June 13. All rehearsals will be on Wednesdays, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. No one makes every rehearsal, after all it is summer, but by the time September rolls around everyone is ready. Please contact Hazzan Schnitzer if you would like to experience Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur from the inside.

Judaism from the Outside In and the Inside Out

Wednesdays 8:00 - 9:00 PM beginning February 21 (continuing series through May and possibly later)

A course that explores Judaism from it's origins in the Ancient Near East, the beginnings of the People of Israel, and the creation of the Biblical canon that would sustain the Jewish people for over three millennia. Then takes the opposite tack and moves to the Hasidic world of Eastern Europe, and immerses the student in the Torah teachings of the great masters whose flame almost went out in the Shoah but begins to stir again in our era through a modern "neo-Hasidic" lens.

Along the way, students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the worship service, the history of the Jewish people, and most importantly the never ending encounter and interpretation of Torah that illuminates the brightest and darkest days of our history.

Texts will include:

BJC's Annual Religious School

Tu B'Shevat Seder

Saturday, February 3, 2007
11:30am -1:00pm
Memorial Hall

Please join us for this annual celebration of the beauty and wonder of nature.

UPDATE:

We are pleased to announce that there will be NO CHARGE ASSESSED for participation in the Tu B'Shevat Seder this year. The generosity of an anonymous underwriter is enabling us to make participation in this ritual available to all (though we'd still like your RSVP to confirm.)

We are aiming to have the Seder ritual start around 11:35 and complete by 12:30pm so that there would still be time for families to go get some lunch, as we will only have enough fruits and nuts at the Seder for each participant to be able to participate in the ritual.

As this only adds a few minutes to our usual Religious school ending time of 12:15pm, we hope most of our students will be able to stay for the whole seder. It's an event appropriate for all ages. Please consider joining us.

We need parent volunteers that day to assist in preparing the fruits, nuts, grape juice and other items, setting the tables, and cleaning up at the end (which should be fairly quick.) In addition, we would like to insure there are at least two adults at each table with students, so please let me or a member of the Education Committee (Rachel Williams, Melissa Keller, Laura Nash, Vicki Bailer, Suzanne Dimoff or Teri Brenits) know if you can help out that day.

On Feb. 3, students in Grades 2-5 will be creating some special "trees" to be displayed at our Seder. They will need some newspaper for this, so you can help by saving some newspapers and sending a few of them to school with your child this week or next.

There is no charge to participate. All members of the congregation are welcome to join us. RSVP         Link to Updated Flyer (PDF)
