Owing to the tremendous response to the a cappella Shabbat service led by Sam Glaser when he visited BJC in October, and to the prototype new all-music service this past summer, BJC is adding another all-music service to our monthly rotation. The service, starting on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 8:00 p.m., and continuing on the first Friday of each month, will be a traditional Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) with very limited instrumentation, but lots of congregational singing. The service is very similar to the one BJC members experienced in Israel this past summer. To make the service a success we need YOU!!! It only works with lots of voices and lots of ruakh (spirit). Let6's all turn out Dec. 7.

Join us for our annual joint Thanksgiving service in the BHPC Sanctuary. with Reverend Dr. Jon Smoot, Hazzan Sunny Schnitzer, Rev. Dr. Scott Winette, Adrian A. Durlester, and the combined BJC/BHPC Choirs. The service will be followed by a brunch in Memorial Hall. Please RSVP to the BJC Office for the brunch. Suggested freewill donation is $7.00 per adult and children 12 or older; children under 12-free.
In addition to donations to help cover the cost of the brunch, members are asked to make a donation to purchase Giant gift cards for the residents of the National center for Children and Families and the Anacostia Children's Center. As part of the joint service, qwe will be completing prepartion of food baskets to be delivered to the National center for Children and Families and the Anacostia Children's Center. Each basket will contain non-perishable food items and a gift certificate so that families may celebrate Thanksgiving with "all the trimmings."
Donations are being accepted now thru Nov. 18. Look for food donation collection baskets at the top of the stairs near the library.

Rabbi Shefa Gold, who has inspired so many BJCC members during her previous visits returns to our area for an evening of new Torah teaching and chant. Chanting, the repetition of a sacred phrase, is an ecstatic form of meditation that can open the doors of the heart, clear the mind of clutter, focus and refine intentions, and connect us to each other. The chant can attune us to ever-deepening levels of meaning, unlock the treasures of the heart, and give us an opportunity to generously serve each other.
Discounted BJC-member price is $10

Habitat will have its own construction crew to supervise, provide instruction, and provide all necessary tools. The workday is from 8:30 - 4:00. Join us for Selichot Service and a Movie-
Film: Liberty Heights, written and directed by Barry Levinson. A touching and humorous story set in Baltimore in the mid 1950's.
Our Rabbis deemed the final hour of the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah as a time of special power. Around the world, Jews gather at midnight to begin the process of repentance with special prayers and songs. Join us and experience the “hush at midnight.”
YOU—are what we need to build a sukkah! Join together to help us set up and decorate our beautiful “indoor Sukkah” on the bimah in Covenant Hall. It has become a new BJC tradition over the past few years. On Sunday, Sept. 23 from 2:00—5:00pm, we need volunteers to set up the structure, and hang the branches, fruits and vegetables that make the indoor sukkah such a joy to the eye and the soul. This is one of those projects suitable for all ages, and snacks will be provided. Please contact the BJC office to sign up to help by Sept. 12.
If you are planning to erect a sukkah at your house, and are willing to have some guests visit it during Sukkot, please let Mr. D or the BJC office know so we can share this information with those who might be interested. If you’re considering erecting your own sukkah this year (and you really ought to think about it) Mr. D. would be happy to assist you in obtaining plans, ready-made kits, and other resources.
Once again, BJC will be placing a bulk order from a supplier for etrogs and lulavim. If you’re interested in obtaining your own to use, information will be available from the RS Office, the BJC Office, or on the BJC Website. It’s best to place your order before Sept. 12 to insure timely delivery for Sukkot.
Did you enjoy the music at last year's High Holidays? Did you look up at the choir and think wistfully, "Gee, I'd like to do that?" Well now, you can! A vibrant and full sounding choir is a key part of creating for the congregation the spirit of the Days of Awe. It also can enrich the holiday experience of the singer as well. There is something deeply satisfying about leading worship through song. The BJC choir needs more voices. Rehearsals begin on June 13. All rehearsals will be on Wednesdays, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. No one makes every rehearsal, after all it is summer, but by the time September rolls around everyone is ready. Please contact Hazzan Schnitzer if you would like to experience Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur from the inside.

A course that explores Judaism from it's origins in the Ancient Near East, the beginnings of the People of Israel, and the creation of the Biblical canon that would sustain the Jewish people for over three millennia. Then takes the opposite tack and moves to the Hasidic world of Eastern Europe, and immerses the student in the Torah teachings of the great masters whose flame almost went out in the Shoah but begins to stir again in our era through a modern "neo-Hasidic" lens.
Along the way, students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the worship service, the history of the Jewish people, and most importantly the never ending encounter and interpretation of Torah that illuminates the brightest and darkest days of our history.
Texts will include:
| Understanding the Old Testament Bernhard W. Anderson Fifth Edition - ISBN 013092380X (Sorry it's a text book and it is expensive - buy it used on Amazon - it's cheaper) | |
| Wrapped in a Holy Flame - Texts and Teachings of the Hasidic Masters Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi Hazzan Sunny Schnitzer |
The Workplace Religious Freedom Act, aimed at strengthening a federal law that requires employers to accommodate the religious needs of workers will soon come before Congress. A coalition that includes more than 40 faith organizations, including the Orthodox Union, American Jewish Committee, the AJCongress and B’nai B’rith International support the measure. The bill is opposed by, among others, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign and Planned Parenthood. Come and share your opinion.

In this session, we will study and discuss texts from each faith tradition that point out our differences and similarities on this central topic. Please RSVP by Saturday, Apr. 14 to the BJC office (and let us know if you’d like to carpool). For information, contact Gary Sampliner at gary.sampliner @do.treas.gov.
