  Staff of Bethesda Jewish Congregation

Director of Education and Congregational Life
Adrian A. Durlester

Adrian, known to the students as "Mr. D." began working at BJC in July 2003, though he is no stranger to BJC, having been part of the Simchah B'Shabbat services since their beginning. Adrian comes to BJC after having served as the Director of Education of Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria, VA. Adrian grew up in New York City and graduated from the Bronx High school of Science. He also received musical training in piano, musical theory and opera production from the pre-college programs at the Juilliard School and later the Manhattan school of Music. He holds a BFA from the North Carolina School of the Arts and worked from 1977-1998 as a theatrical production and venue manager and designer. In May 2000, Adrian received a Master of Theological Studies degree from Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Adrian has been working in the field of Jewish education and Jewish/synagogue music since 1988. He has worked as a teacher, administrator, music and choir director. Adrian served as chair of the 27th annual conference of the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE) and previously served as chair of evening program for the 1998 & 2001 CAJE Conferences, and has been a member of the CAJE Board. He also maintains an e-mail list and web site that brings together Jewish songleaders, songwriters, performers, cantors, soloists from all over the country and the world. He edited C.HA, a weekly e-mail Jewish news magazine for teens, published by Torah Aura Productions.

In the Metro D.C. community, Adrian is a co-director of the Shir Tze'irJewish Teen Choir, serves as music/entertainment coordinator for the Jewish Folk Arts Festival, teaches  Confirmation classes at Agudas Achim Congregation in Alexandria, and still even manages to find time to perform with and accompany other Jewish musicians and groups in the area. He is also the webmaster of the BJC web site.

Mr. D's personal website (including his weekly Random Musings Before Shabbat archives)

An excerpt from one of Adrian's Musings was included in the August 2006 book, Rosh Hashanah Readings, edited by Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins and published by Jewish Lights.

Synagogue Administrator
Roz Young

Roz is the backbone of BJC. Roz has been a BJC member for some time, and has worked as a religious school teacher both here at BJC and at other synagogues. Prior to coming to BJC, Roz had a long and successful career in the banking industry, from which she is now happily retired.
