First BJC/BHPC/JIC Study Group Session at
Jaferia Islamic Center
Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 1:30 p.m.
Please join us on Saturday, Apr. 21 at 1:30 p.m. for the first
of our three-way Lunch and Learn Study Group sessions between
our clergy and members of BJC, BHPC, and the Jaferia Islamic
Center. This event, for socializing and study, will be held at
the Jaferia Islamic Center, 3140 Spencerville Rd., Burtonsville.
The topic for our study will be: “How Do We Talk to God? Mode
and Object of Prayer.” Christianity, Islam, and Judaism each
take a different approach in intimacy, language, and
relationship with the Divine. In this session, we will study and
discuss texts from each faith tradition that point out our
differences and similarities on this central topic. Please
RSVP
by Saturday, Apr. 14 to the BJC office (and let us know if you’d
like to carpool). For information, contact Gary Sampliner at
gary.sampliner@do.treas.gov .
Second session Sunday, May 21, 1:00 pm at BHPC/BJC |
About IPPIES
|
The Intercongregational
Partnership (or "IPPIES" as the group calls itself) organizes
and supports a variety of interfaith activities for BJC and BHPC
members, as well as the wider community. Comprised of members
from both congregations, the IPPIES embrace the principle that
it is essential to build strong bonds and understanding among
diverse faith traditions. To help accomplish this, the IPPIES'
programs have encompassed:
 | Spiritual activities (e.g., interfaith
dialogues between BJC and BHPC clergy) |
 | Social gatherings (e.g., interfaith
discussions among families from both congregations and joint
intergenerational events with adults and children) |
 | Social action issues in the local community
(e.g., a Habitat for Humanity build with BJC and BHPC
congregants) |
 | Social justice issues abroad (e.g.,
fundraisers for Neve Shalom, a Muslim, Christian, and Jewish
community in Israel). |
IPPIES' meetings are usually held the first
Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome.

Ramadan celebration
This year, the High Holy Days will roughly coincide with the
Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Protestant/Orthodox World
Wide Communion Sunday. To commemorate this time time for
learning from the past, celebrating the present, and
transforming the future, the Islamic Information Center of
Burtonsville, with whom we have held several joint events in
recent years, has invited all interested members of our
congregation and Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church to join them
for a Ramadan Celebration at
Idara-e-Jaferia Community Center (mosque)
3140 Spencerville Road (Rte. 198), Burtonsville.
At this event, they will have a meal to share and explain
some of their Ramadan customs to their visitors. They have asked
Hazzan Schnitzer to speak as well. Please join us for this event
-- if you can attend, please
RSVP at the synagogue office. For further information, or if
you are interested in carpooling, contact Gary Sampliner at

BJC & BHPC Issue Joint Statement
The BJC Board of Trustees and the Session of
Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church agreed to issue a joint
statement in response to actions taken by the Presbyterian
Church (USA) at its General Assembly meeting last summer. The
actions coming out of that gathering have led to tensions
between Presbyterians and Jews in the United States and the
world. Specifically those actions are; continued funding of Avodat Yisrael, a messianic congregation in Philadelphia that
targets Jews for conversion to Christianity, and divestment of
PC (USA) holdings of companies that do business in Israel and
are connected to Israeli military actions in the West Bank and
Gaza. Because of BJC and BHPC’s long relationship, the
leadership of our congregations believes that we have a
responsibility and a unique voice to address the controversy. It
is hoped that our statement will influence PC (USA) policy and
transform the current divisive argument into a concrete vision
of peace and prosperity for both the Israeli and Palestinian
people.
